The biggest leak in home-services marketing is the call nobody answered

Before you spend another dollar on ads, find out how many calls go to voicemail. It's usually the cheapest fix in the whole funnel.

Most home-services contractors we meet want more leads. Almost none of them know how many leads they already have that never turn into a conversation.

Here’s the pattern. Ads run. The phone rings. A tech is on a roof, the office manager is at lunch, it’s 6:40pm. The call goes to voicemail. The homeowner doesn’t leave a message; they call the next company on the list. The ad was paid for. The lead was real. Nothing was booked.

How to find your own number

You don’t need software to get a first read. Pull your call log for the last 30 days and count three things:

  1. Calls that rang out or hit voicemail during business hours.
  2. Calls that came in after hours or on weekends.
  3. Voicemails that were never returned.

Add them up and multiply by your average ticket. That figure is what the leak is costing you per month, before any new marketing.

What to do about it

Fix it in this order, because each step is cheaper than the next:

  • Make sure every call rings somewhere. Forward overflow to a second phone. It sounds obvious; it is skipped constantly.
  • Answer after hours. This is where an AI voice agent earns its keep: it answers on the first ring, books the appointment into your calendar, and texts the homeowner a confirmation. It hands off to a human the moment the caller asks for one.
  • Return every voicemail within the hour. A simple rule, a simple report.

Only then should you turn the ad budget up. Marketing that fills a leaking bucket is the most expensive marketing there is.
